Six single family residences on North Bay and Pine Ave

I read that PAR may consider building six single-family homes on North Bay and Pine Aves.

When one considers the following, this may be the best use of that corner.

Chris Collins noted that our city cannot sustain a lot of businesses--witness how quickly they go under.

Robin Wall rightly pointed out that residents want their peace and quiet protected.

She said any businesses should fit accordingly--low-key, small, 'no-impact' and resident-serving. Nothing boisterous or busy. No promotions as a destination point. No 'promenades' of more tourists.

When one considers that in tourist season (which gets longer every year,) too much traffic already strains our infrastructure, and that too many wedding tourists, noise and crowding distresses residents and reduces their quality of life, then one might conclude that six single-family homes on North Bay and Pine could be the best use of the land.

  1. Diane, I would prefer the idea that was promoted earlier by Periwinkle that the six lots be converted into a city park so that the area could continue to be utilized for community events like the music festivals that are currently so popular with residents and visitors alike.

    Perhaps if there is wide support for a community space of this nature we should start a petition. I am currently out of state until the first week in July, but would be happy to help circulate such a petition when I get back.

  2. This is not a new idea, nor is it without merit. There is one huge problem: Money. For years we've heard, "The city should have bought this," "The city should have bought that." Our former Mayor had sights on several properties, but no funds to do it. Before the "row houses" were built on Pine, the city went to great lengths to get funding to buy the property, but it required the city to contract for the property, buy it, then apply for the grant. If you think that's the way to go, I got a bridge across Tampa Bay, you know the one with the bright yellow cables suspending it, that I'll sell you!

  3. A city park on the 6 lots would be great but the city doesn't have the money. The amount paid for the land in 2005 was 3.2 million. Grant money is hard to come by this year so a park scenario isn't looking very good. Btw better watch those grants. Don't want to end up a scenic highway like B.B.

    The PAR folks or whoever will build on the 6 lots what suits their bottom line. Residences would be a nice laid-back use of the land and wouldn't create much traffic. Be great if each building looked different too. Hate the clone look. Time will tell.
