Many people in the City of Anna Maria are not pleased that our current building code allows the 37 foot tall, vertically sided ‘shoe-box’ structure where the third level of the structure is the same size as the second level and where the structure covers the maximum allowable lot coverage. Many cities have brought in some form of development regulation to solve the problem of excessive mass or bulk of buildings. If we citizens want the Commission and P &Z to continue to explore ways to reduce the bulk or mass of buildings in our city then we must let them know now.
Under this post topic, let’s talk the large ‘shoe-box’ bulk issue. Do we want the Commission and P&Z to continue their work on this issue? If so, why, what are your concerns, what would you like to see, etc.?

Six single family residences on North Bay and Pine Ave
I read that PAR may consider building six single-family homes on North Bay and Pine Aves.
When one considers the following, this may be the best use of that corner.
Chris Collins noted that our city cannot sustain a lot of businesses--witness how quickly they go under.
Robin Wall rightly pointed out that residents want their peace and quiet protected.
She said any businesses should fit accordingly--low-key, small, 'no-impact' and resident-serving. Nothing boisterous or busy. No promotions as a destination point. No 'promenades' of more tourists.
When one considers that in tourist season (which gets longer every year,) too much traffic already strains our infrastructure, and that too many wedding tourists, noise and crowding distresses residents and reduces their quality of life, then one might conclude that six single-family homes on North Bay and Pine could be the best use of the land.

Newspaper full page ad.
A thought just came to mind. Would it not be nice if PAR and its vast financial resources were to sponsor a full page ad in the local papers for "Our Anna Maria. Preserve it or lose it", to set forth its preferences for Anna Maria development.
Just a thought.
Just a thought.

Thrasher
On Thursday evening, I had the opportunity to sit and talk with Lizzie and Mike Thrasher, new partners in PAR. Both were easy to talk
with. Basically, I gave some ideas of what we permanent residents of Anna Maria would like to see happen to the island. That being no motels, large residential and retail structures, no buildings that were out of proportion to existing older structures in the city.
They asked what business islanders would like to see. I suggested they
establish a web site that residents could set forth with the ideas and feelings.
Hopefully, such comments by residents would not be of a personal nature, but, rather ideas for futures business.
The overall tone of the meeting was very pleasant and hopefully will
lead to further discussion and the advancement of ideas from islanders for
PAR's consideration.

Thanks
Thanks, Duke for initiating this blog. As you said we need to be diligent to keep Anna Maria like it is now and to stop the money people from taking advantage of any opprotunity to get a foot hold into the city.
A Great Way to Keep In Touch 24/7 from Anywhere
Duke,
Thanks for setting this up. We can now read the comments of our fellow AMI City residents on topics as they are proposed and add our comments.
This is especially important when we are out of town. Even though gone we are still "in touch"

Positive Action for Anna Maria City
Thanks, Duke, for creating a place for residents of our island city to soundoff concerns and share positive ideas about what is happening to our city. We must be vigilant because others are just waiting for an opportunity to take over and change our lovely unique spot.
